While there is no one cure for insomnia there are many things that you can do avoid suffering from this debilitating condition.

Most people will at some stage of their lives suffer from insomnia and the statistics are staggering. Many experts have alluded to the fact that we lead more stressful lives than in the past and life certainly has evolved into a frenetic rat race. These definitely are factors that agitate our fragile sleeping patterns and not all of them can be avoided.

Unfortunately too many prescriptions are written for pills which ultimately cannot do the body any good. It is a fair point that sleep deprivation can be just as harmful however reliance on pills is not the answer. It may work short term but what happens when the time to stop taking them and to sleep naturally again occurs

If pills are to be taken, it is probably best to try and utilise natural insomnia remedies. there are dozens of them filling the shelves at the local drug store and some of them are quite effective.

Nature provides many relaxing herbs and plants but they are not always effective. It depends on the severity of the insomnia.

There are many things a person can do before resorting to drastic measure and with some practice and discipline in their application, most will work.

Mental association has been something that experts have denied in the past however many are now agreeing with the principal. Insomnia can actually cause anxiety about needing to sleep. Because insomnia is often a psychological problem it makes sense to investigate the psychology of it.

When a person suffers from insomnia, they often dread going to sleep and a negative association is formed. They get worked up before they even get into bed as they know the chance of falling asleep without tossing, turning and getting aggravated is slim.

One of the best cures for insomnia is to break the negative association with sleep. While this is tricky to do it is certainly worth practising. If you think about it, many people cannot sleep when they have a big day ahead of them. This has been proven with professional sports players the day before a big game but ordinary folks can relate to it as the day before an exam or the start of a new job for instance.

This example illustrates just how much of our sleep problems develop in the mind. When we are deprived of sleep, the mind starts playing tricks, placing immense important on a good sleep and we go into panic mode.

We carry so much baggage from our day that it all swirls around in our minds when we should be switching off. This in simple terms is over stimulation of the mind. Television is a major cause of this and avoiding television before bed is a very good start.

Very few of us actually unwind properly after our full and busy days and this can lead to erratic sleeping patterns.

Another problem which can lead to insomnia along with irregular sleeping patterns is sleeping too much. It is advisable to be rigid with sleeping times to try and get the internal clock in sync.

The bed should be used for sleep and not a place to watch television or read a book. By doing so we are telling our brain that this is a place of restful sleep, not a place to relax and watch T.V.

Exercise also plays a major role in a good nights sleep. It will get oxygen flowing around the body and eases the mind into a restful state when it’s time to sleep.

Relaxation is the key to falling into a natural sleep. It is the ultimate cure for insomnia and many things can be done to achieve a deep relaxation.

Meditation and yoga are proven to be excellent to aide sleep. They will put your mind and body in balance and allow you to let go of all of your mental baggage. Doing this daily will certainly help form a sleeping routine. For many people who want to go into deep meditation, it takes months of practice for them not to fall into a deep sleep while practising it. If that is their problem then it could very well be your solution.

Many of us don’t realise how mental baggage affects our sleep and meditation and relaxing music will certainly help. There may be a physiological problem afflicting some insomnia sufferers and if it persists it would be wise to consult a doctor.

Regardless of whether the initial cause of insomnia is physical or not, practising the mental relaxation techniques discussed above will ultimately lead to many more nights of restful slumber and that is a far better cure for insomnia than sleeping pills.

A restful nights sleep is so important to our well being and yet so few of us ever get enough of it. Even worse, a large percentage of the population suffers from a form of insomnia. Symptoms of insomnia are often the result of lack of sleep rather than not being able to sleep at all.

Sometimes falling asleep occurs effortlessly but we do not fall into deep restful sleep or we are awoken by noises or lights that distract our precious sleep. Often these interrupted sleep pattern can lead to more serious forms of insomnia. Something as simple as a change of routine or jet lag can lead to many nights of restless sleep which in turn can lead to insomnia.

Symptoms of insomnia can often materialise from a large amount of stress or even change. A relocation, change of job or even new working hours can throw our internal clocks so out of balance that it leads to insomnia.

Anyone who has suffered from insomnia for a length of time knows just how cruel it can be and how difficult it is to get back into proper sleeping patterns.

The most common symptoms of insomnia are often mental. Erratic behaviour after prolonged periods of insufficient sleep affect not just the insomniac but everyone else around them too. This can put a massive strain on family life and relationships.

Another common symptom is losing the will to live. Everything becomes far more of an effort that it should be. Things like taking the trash out become too much effort and tasks that require ‘brain work’ become even more difficult and exhausting adding to the mind’s desperation to just recharge.

This lack of motivation creates more problems as often work gets neglected leading to guilt. Another common symptom is apathy. This is actually a very big warning sign from your body as it is actually a form of depression. A person cannot function properly without sleep and the human body can actually survive longer without food than without sleep.

If a person has not slept for a few days, hallucinations can occur and once a person has reached this stage psychosis will be soon to follow.

These are rather extreme cases and the more common symptoms of insomnia are tossing and turning, not being able to switch off, waking up in the middle of the night and not being able to get back to sleep and waking up too early in the morning.

Another common symptom of insomnia is waking up and feeling like you have not slept at all. This is often due to not falling into a deep sleep during which rapid eye movement occurs. This is the most restful and recharging form of sleep and not attaining it can actually leave a person feeling as if they would have been better off if they had no sleep at all.

There are many things a person can do to counteract the symptoms of insomnia. Some will require practise but considering how important sleep is to us it is a small price to pay for a restful nights sleep. Sleeping pills can quickly cause dependency and if at all possible, natural remedies for insomnia are preferred.

There are many remedies for insomnia, some are natural and some come in the form of over the counter or even prescribed medication. The most important thing however is to try and ascertain what the cause of the insomnia is. Its like any other medical condition, without getting to the root of the problem, one can only ever mask the symptoms.

Transient insomnia which is a type of insomnia which presents itself for a period of time usually a few days can often be the result of stress, psychological problems, jet lag, a change in routine or could even be caused by external things such as an uncomfortable bed.

Chronic insomnia is however far more serious and can be extremely detrimental to a person’s lifestyle. This type of insomnia could be caused by physiological problems and if insomnia persists for more than a few days, a doctor should be consulted.

This type of insomnia can literally drive a person insane. It will have far reaching repercussions to how the person interacts with others and can often trigger erratic behaviour. It will also have a negative impact on their work and home life.

Remedies for insomnia are plentiful and often it may take quite a bit of trial and error to find one that works for you. There is nothing more frustrating than looking at the clock knowing that another sleepless hour has passed and you feel no closer to that elusive slumber.

This can actually cause a negative association to sleep and quite often can lead to anxiety when a person knows they have to go to sleep but probably wont be able to switch off. It is very important to stay calm and relax in this situation.

Your brain develops patterns of association much quicker than you may realise and a few nights of frustration trying to fall asleep can be enough to create a negative association to sleeping in your own bed.

If you are battling to sleep, make sure that you do nothing but sleep in your bed. That means no T.V. in your bedroom. You need to make a distinction in your brain that your bed is for sleep.

If you can avoid taking sleeping pills do so.

Here are a few remedies for insomnia that you can try.

The most obvious and most important is a comfortable bed. We spend a third of our lives in our beds, it makes sense to have a comfortable one. If your mattress is old and is not helping your cause, get a new one as a matter of urgency.

Television and computers before bed are known to cause sleep problems. A book is a much better bet and it certainly should help to make you tired. The trick is not to overstimulate your mind. You need to tell your mind that it is relaxation time.

Another obvious thing is to cut out coffee, soda, or any other sugary or caffeine filled food or drinks for at least four hours before bed time. If you can eat at least four hours before you go to bed this has also been known to help.

A warm relaxing bath before bed can also do the trick, maybe try and read a book in the bath and get yourself into a relaxed frame of mind.

Try and concentrate on your breathing. Steady deep breaths will help. Try and breath so that your stomach rather than your chest expands when you inhale. Controlled breathing takes some practice but it certainly does aide sleep.

Alcohol is definitely something you should avoid. While in some cases alcohol may help a person fall asleep, it prevents the stage of sleep when a person experiences rapid eye movement which is the most restful and recharging stage of sleep.

A glass of warm milk before bed has been known to help but this could be more of a placebo effect due to the nature of the association to an old wives tale, however some experts claim that there is a physiological benefit.

The best remedy for insomnia is often a combination of exercise, and relaxation techniques.

Exercise plays a bigger role than many people realise in aiding a restful night sleep.

Meditation or other activities such as yoga require some practice but they certainly will bring more balance and harmony and it is definitely worth learning some of these techniques if you are prone to insomnia.

These methods will train your mind to let go of all of the irritations that are nagging away in your mind while you are trying to sleep. With a bit of practice you will be able to go to bed and think of nothing at all. Its amazing how fast a person can fall asleep when there are no thoughts running through their mind.

One of the most underrated remedies for insomnia is relaxing music. Focussing on the music will help distract your mind from all of the day’s influences and irritation and after some time your mind will make the association of relaxing and falling asleep to the music.

If it is not possible to remedy insomnia with these methods, a person may have to take medication prescribed by a doctor however this does not stop a person for practising these methods so that they can be used successfully to fall asleep without the use of medication in the future.
